Bees by post

Found this post box with a well established bee colony inside it, they could be saved with a cut out but doubt they would survive the winter if left alone.

  1. It doesn’t seem a bad place to spend the winter for the bees. I’ve read a blog that watches a feral colony which has survived in a very small space. Bees can be surprising. Is it very far away from you to keep an eye on? Amelia

  2. Yes i agree feral colonies survive quite happily without any help there is one in our neighbours chimney and its been there at least 8 years … but its more that the post box wont be left unusable by royal mail forever but more to the point the metal front will draw all the heat out of the hive and also make condensation which will kill the bees off through the freezing days of winter … yes its 300 miles away .. I was on holiday in St Davids for the last two weeks 🙂
